The ectopic pregnancy is commonly experienced cases in Obstetrics and Gynecology Department. However, the frequency and the statistics of patients tend to ever increase their trend, so that the proper care and assays of diagnoses need to be pursued.
This study was based on the diagnostic approach for the 73 suspected ectopic pregnancy patients admitted and treated in Ewha Woman University Hospital during the period from May 1, 1985 to July 31, 1986. The results were as follows:
1. Age distribution of the patients ranged from 22 to 44 and the average age was 30.1±5.4 year.
2. Among the major complaints, so called clastic triad of pain were a) abdominal pain (88%) b) amenorrhea (76%) c) vaginaal bleeding (61%) and d) the others were also recorded as much as 10%.
3. Culdocentesis was not effective for the ectopic pregnancy due mainly to when ruptured cases show positive result only, but not unruptured ones.
4. Discriminatory zone of 6,000-6,500 mlU/mL could not be applicable to our case, however, the trend of low value of HCG level gave assisting information of sonographic evaluations. 5. The reliability of ultrasonographic diagnosis was 71%. Therefore no single laboratory test gave definitive diagnosis but the combination of the two methods gave the best reliability. Thus the sonographic evaluation and the serum ?-HCG RIA were complementary each other.
